One of the most popular day trips from London is a visit to the beautiful town of Windsor. Home to the late Queen Elizabeth II – who resided in the splendid Windsor Castle (the oldest inhabited castle in the world) – Windsor is located a mere 25 miles from central London.
Invited by Walks Tours who recently launched their Windsor in a Day Tour – a Day Trip from London which includes Windsor Castle & a Thames River Cruise we jumped at the chance to take part in this guided tour to learn more about this beautiful and historic town.

1 Day in Windsor Tour with Walks – Photo Diary
Start – Meeting Walks staff member Claudia and our tour guide for the day (Julia) near Victoria Train Station
2. In the minibus on the way to Windsor (our driver for the day was Mark)
3. Arriving at Windsor
4. Organising our meet-up point for the day (The Ivy Windsor)
5. Guided tour through Windsor to the Long Walk
6. The Changing of the Guard/Free time
Unfortunately due to preparations for the King’s coronation the Changing of the Guard at Windsor was cancelled only a few minutes before it was due to take place.
These are images taken during a previous visit.
As the guard change was cancelled we had some free time to explore the town and purchase some souvenirs.
7. Boat trip along the Thames
8. Lunch stop – free time
After the boat trip it is time for lunch and the group split up at this point with an agreed meet-up time to reconvene.
Julia provided the group with suggestions for eateries in Windsor. I chose to have lunch at the Ivy (how pretty is the decor – event the bathroom is gorgeous)
9. Tour of Windsor Castle
After lunch it is time to explore the castle.
Our guide explained the history of the castle and shared how to tell if the monarch – King Charles III – is in residence. Clue – it’s to do with which flag is flying!
The first stop on the tour is a visit to St George’s Chapel to pay respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II who was laid to rest in the chapel.
Following the visit to the Chapel (no photography is allowed) enjoy a tour of the castle itself (audio guided)
10. Back to London
Following our tour of Windsor Castle we headed back to the minibus and our transfer back to London.
Is the Windsor in a Day tour worth it?
I thoroughly enjoyed this tour with Walks. Even though I have visited Windsor and Windsor Castle a number of times I thoroughly enjoyed learning from our expert guide Julia.
I learnt things I didn’t know and also enjoyed the ability to chat with Julia and ask her questions about particular areas of interest (such as where Queen Victoria is buried) was excellent.
